Kolkata proudly hosts India’s sole Chinatown, a testament to our enduring love for Chinese cuisine. For my family, dining out often meant savoring Chinese dishes. Even at home, Chinese meals offered a delightful change from our typical “ghar ka khana.”
This affection has deep roots, dating back about 300 years when Tong Achew, the first recorded Chinese settler in India, established a sugar cane plantation. His legacy lives on in the fusion cuisine we adore, known as “Chindian” or Indian Chinese, born from a blend of Chinese traditions and local flavors.
